The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) president Ahmad Ahmad has expressed sadness over the death of former Marseille president Pape Diouf.

The Senegalese died on Tuesday in Dakar where he was hospitalized after contracting the deadly coronavirus.

He had been due to leave for Nice earlier on Wednesday to be treated in France, but a sharp deterioration in his health prevented him from boarding the plane.

“Pape Diouf was an extraordinary man and his life speaks for him. He’ll stay as the glory of our sport and pride for Africa. I wish to extend sincere condolences to his family and friends,” said CAF President Ahmad Ahmad.

Diouf was born in Chad but had French and Senegalese citizenship and led the French club between 2005-2009 and helped build the side that lifted the Ligue 1 title in 2010.

He started as a journalist and later as a football agent with the likes of Marcel Desailly, Basile Boli, Khalilou Fadiga, Samir Nasri and Didier Drogba among his long list of clients.

Diouf was a regular guest at the Africa Cup of Nations often as a co-commentator or analyst.
