Algeria top division side JS Kabylie has confirmed their president, Cherif Mella, has sustained injuries after being attacked by ‘thugs’ inside his office on Tuesday.

Algeria top division side JS Kabylie has confirmed their president, Cherif Mellal, has sustained injuries after being attacked by ‘thugs’ inside his office on Tuesday.

Mellal was set upon at roughly 1500hrs CAT in Tizi-Ouzou and sustained head injuries while trying to repel the attackers.

“A group of individuals broke into the club office and violently attacked club employees and those present at the scene. President Cherif Mellal was assaulted. Equipment has been damaged,” the club revealed in an official statement.

It is believed the thugs took advantage of the absence of the security assigned to the football boss to commit their crime.

According to a highly placed security source who asked for anonymity, Mellal has reported the matter to the police.

There have been no arrests in relation to the incident and Police are checking CCTV footage.

The images showing Mellal wounded and covered with blood quickly made the rounds of social networks.

Anyone with information in relation to the attack is urged to come forward.
