BREAKING: Gambia FA Denies Scorpions Friendly Against Kenya

The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) has denied that the Scorpions will play a friendly game with their Kenya counterparts in France.

The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) has denied that the Scorpions will play a friendly game with their Kenya counterparts in France.

Kenya announced a fortnight ago that they had lined up the friendly against the Scorpions on June 17 in preparations for the upcoming 2019 African Cup of Nations finals slated for June 21 to July 19 in Egypt.

GFF spokesperson, Bakary Baldeh, released a communique on Tuesday afternoon confirming the new development.

“The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) wishes to clarify that contrary to the announcement made by the Kenyan Football Federation (FKF), there is nothing confirmed yet with regard to the proposed international football friendly between the Senior National Team of The Gambia and their Kenyan counterparts,” part of the statement reads.

“It is true that the GFF is currently negotiating, with a FIFA match agent, to play a friendly match(es) in France next month, however, nothing is being confirmed yet. There are other options that we are currently studying so it isn’t only Kenya.”

“The GFF further wishes to clarify that it is not talking directly with the Kenyan FA but rather the said agent who is acting as an intermediary between us. To conclude, we wish to further reassure our stakeholders and the general public that we will keep you updated on any progress made on the matter.”

Kenya will be making a return to the continental showpiece after 15 years while the Gambia failed to qualify for the tournament after drawing 1-1 away to Algeria.

The East Africans are in Group C alongside Algeria, Tanzania and pre-tournament favorites Senegal.

Harambee Stars, set to leave for their three-week camp in Paris on May 31 before departing for Cairo on June 18, will camp at Marcousis. They will play the first match of the Afcon against Algeria on June 21.

The 32nd Africa Cup of Nations will hold in four Egyptian cities: Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and Ismailia, from June 21 to July 19.
