Benin Vitalor Ligue 1 side Buffles FC on Monday sacked head coach Akinyelu Akinsola following their 1-0 defeat to UPI-ONM at the weekend.

The five-time champions are languishing in 7th position in the Vitalor Ligue 1 standings and are yet to pick a win in the last five fixtures.

“The decision has been taken due to results and performances not being at the level required,” read the statement on the club’s website.

“We have asked Aboubakar Dan Dano to take responsibility for the first team as interim head coach. We have full confidence in Dano to take us forward.

“The search for a new head coach is underway and we will make a further announcement when that process is complete.”

In a rejoinder, Akinsola thanked Buffles for according him the necessary support during his tenure as the head coach.

Reliable sources confided to Ducor Sports that the board was contemplating engaging Akinsola as their youth team coach.

In recent weeks, there has been pressure from Buffles fans for Akinsola to resign following lack of good performance despite the team enjoying overwhelming support from its various sponsors.

The Nigeria tactician arrived at Buffles in November 2018, where he signed a one-year renewable contract with an aim of winning a third consecutive title for the Benin Super Cup champions.
