Asamoah Gyan has announced his retirement from international football after 16 years playing for Ghana.

The 33-year-old striker made more than 100 appearances for The Black Stars and played in three World Cups. He also featured in seven editions of the Africa Cup of Nations.

His announcement comes hours after the Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah rescheduled a presser where the gaffer was supposed to name Ghana’s provisional squad for the upcoming 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Sources close to the Ghanaian FA indicate that coach Kwesi Appiah had decided to name Andre Dede Ayew as the new captain of the Black Stars for the tournament in which Gyan is not enthused about.

“I would continue to serve the country Ghana in other endeavors as a businessman through various investments.”

Gyan scored 51 goals in 106 appearances for the Black Stars and made history when he became the first ever Ghanaian to score at a FIFA World Cup.
