Amavubi Coach Confident of CHAN Qualification

Rwanda coach Vincent Mashami is confident Amavubi will qualify for the 2020 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) which will take place in Cameroon.

Rwanda coach Vincent Mashami is confident Amavubi will qualify for the 2020 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) which will take place in Cameroon.

Amavubi head into the last leg of the final round of qualifiers at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on 19 October enjoying a 1-0 advantage from the first leg played against Ethiopia in Addis Ababa.

A draw or victory will see Rwanda qualify, for a third consecutive time, to the finals of the tournament designed exclusively for footballers playing in their domestic leagues.

According to coach Mashami, it will be folly for Amavubi to go for a draw at home soil, thus he has backed his players to put up a strong performance and get ‘the result that every Rwandan expects’.

[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””] “I believe we have the necessary quality and talent. And, I also think I don’t need to remind my players of how much the game (against Ethiopia) means to us as a team and as a country.”   [/perfectpullquote]

“The target is not to hold on to the first-leg lead, but rather to fight for another victory.”

Mashami has no injury concerns heading into the match as Rwanda look to maintain their 100 per cent winning run at home in recent months with the latest result being a goalless draw against Tanzania in an international friendly played on Monday night.

Rwanda made its CHAN debut in 2011 before hosting the 2016 showpiece and qualifying for the 5th edition, hosted and won by Morocco, last year.

The Central African nation best performance in the tournament was reaching the quarter-finals in 2016. Amavubi bowed out from the group stage at the 2011 and 2018 editions.
