Senegal Goalkeeper Mendy Completes Transfer Switch To Chelsea

Senegal international goalkeeper has officially left France Ligue One side Rennes to sign for English Premier League side Chelsea on a five-year contract.

Chelsea, who suffered a 2-0 in the hands of Liverpool on Sunday, made the announcement this afternoon on their official website.

Mendy, who moves to EPL after spending one season at the French Ligue One outfit, has been in England to complete the move following an agreement reached last week by the two sides.

“I am so excited to be joining Chelsea. It’s a dream for me to be a part of this exciting squad and to work with Frank Lampard and all of his coaching staff. I look forward to meeting my team-mates and can’t wait to get started,” said Mendy after putting pen on paper.

On his part, Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said they have brought Mendy to compete for the starting position with Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero.

“As soon as Petr Cech and our technical team identified Edouard as the most suitable goalkeeper to complement our existing group, there was only one player we wanted to bring in. Edouard arrives following a season of real success with Rennes, he is ambitious for more, and we welcome him to our club.”

Mendy started his career at French third-tier outfit AS Cherbourg and remained with the Normandy-based club until 2014 when he joined Marseille B.

After one season with the side, he switched to Reims where he stayed for four years before making a switch to Rennes where he quickly established himself as the first choice between the sticks.

Last season, the French-born star helped Rennes qualify for the Champions League for the first time with the French club finishing third in Ligue One.
