Former South Sudan FA President Set to Appeal 10-Year Ban by FIFA

Former South Sudan Football Association president Chabur Goc Alei has confirmed that he will appeal against the 10-year ban handed to him by FIFA.

FIFA handed the lengthy ban last week after the world football governing body’s Independent Ethics Committee found him guilty of misappropriation of funds and offering gifts or benefits.

But on Tuesday, Alei said he will appeal the decision and he is ready to go as far as the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) to see the ban lifted.

“We have decided to assign an international law firm specialized in this field to appeal against FIFA’s decision in the Court of Arbitration of Sport,” Alei said in a statement.

FIFA’s ruling was delivered on Friday and included a fine of 500,000 Swiss francs (US$499,000).

The South Sudan government is investigating Alei and has already issued a warrant of arrest for misappropriation of the funds and failing to hand in a vehicle that belonged to the association.

Alei resigned as South Sudan football boss on Wednesday, November 30, 2016, after he was suspended by FA’s executive committee for financial impropriety.

The board accused him of among others, “taking decisions on financial expenditures of the Association alone without the knowledge of Members of Board of Directors and members of finance committee’, including the transfer of $400,000 to his personal account between 11th and 19th March 2015, and single-handedly borrowing $12,000.
