Zamalek’s Appeal Against Red-Card Rejected by CAF

The appeal by Egyptian giants Zamalek against a red-card issue to goalkeeper Mahmoud Gennesh in their CAF Confederation Cup semi-final against Etoile du Sahel has been rejected by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), according to reports.

Controversy arose after Gennesh was awarded a second yellow card for what the referee deemed as time-wasting antics after he fell on the ground for several minutes.

Turning down the appeal, CAF said that a look at the day’s match reports indicated that the red-card was valid because it was issued after two yellow cards.

Zamalek had requested CAF to rescind the decision and allow the player to feature in their next match, for which he is suspended.

Gennesh has been widely praised by Zamalek’s faithful for a series of impressive displays this season as the club fight for three titles namely, the Egyptian Premier League, the Egypt Cup and the Confederation Cup.

The White Knights will meet Morocco’s RS Berkane in a two-legged Confederation Cup final later this month. The first leg is scheduled to take place at Stade Municipal de Berkane, Morocco.

Zamalek won the elite Champions League five times but have never won Africa’s secondary club competition.
