Congo Captain Quits International Football

Congolese international midfielder Prince Alban Oniangué has reportedly called it a day on his international career for an indefinite period.

According to Agence d’Information d’Afrique Centrale, the 30-year-old, who has hit 9 goals in 41 appearances for Congo-Brazzaville, has cited the “intolerable” abuse he has been subjected to following the Red Devils 2-0 defeat to Zimbabwe on Sunday.

Oniangue, who plays for Caen in France’s Ligue 1, is said to have become a public enemy in his homeland after the team lost the match and hence missed an opportunity to play in the Egypt 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

“It is our understanding that Oniangue sent a letter to the Congo-Brazzaville Football Association late on Tuesday night (March 27) informing them of his decision, which had the “full support of family and friends”, the Central African media organization reported.

According to a source at the Congo-Brazzaville FA, the letter concludes by stating that he will notify them when, and if, he wishes to return in the future.

Oniangue has been a key player and pillar at Red Devils since his debut in 2008 and was part of the squad that qualified to 2015 AFCON finals held in Equatorial Guinea.
