Zamalek Eliminated From CAF Champions League

Zamalek have been eliminated from the CAF Champions League after Petro du Luanda beat Sagrada Esperance on Saturday.

The White Knights have not won any of their first four games and they lie third in Group D with two points, eight behind leaders Angola’s Petro Atletico, who have qualified to the last eight.

The highest the Cairo giants can achieve is eight points, which means they are out as they failed to sparkle  in their Friday’s match against Wydad Casablanca, who will fight for the top position on the log with Petro du Luanda.

Sagdra Esperança are bottom of the pile with just one point collected from their home draw against Zamalek in a match played few weeks ago.

The game in Luanda, saw Petro start the match on a positive note as they went ahead on the first minute  courtesy of skipper Tiago Azulao.

The Brazilian footballer added his second on the 44th minute, sliding in to poke the ball home after the keeper had spilled a shot from distance.

Erico Castro sealed the win in the 90th minute from the spot as Sandra failed to play their normal passing game, allowing the hosts to walk away with the full three points.

In another match played on Saturday, Esperance de Tunis catapulted to the top of Group C after beating Etoile du Sahel 2-0 in a Tunisian derby played at the Stade Olympique de Rades.

Abdelkader Bedrane and Mohamed Ben Romdhane scored the goals for the Blood and Gold as they took their points tally to eight, same as second placed CR Belouizdad.

Elsewhere, Hotoya AC registered their first win in Group B when they beat Raja Casablanca 2-1 at the Stade General Lansana Conte in Conakry.

Raja went ahead on the 19th minute courtesy of  Hamid Ahadad’s strike but the hosts found an equalizer in the 26th minute when skipper Oncasey Mandela controlled a cross from the left before shooting beyond the keeper.

The Guineans went into the lead three minutes later when Yakhouba Barry found the back of the net from the spot after a foul inside the box.
