Why Burkina Faso League Won’t Resume Soon

There is uncertainty over the future of Burkina Faso Professional League (LPF) which has ground to a halt because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The league matches were previously rescheduled to allow the national team to prepare for 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals that were set to be played in Cameroon in April.

But the government directive on banning football activities after the country confirmed the first case of coronavirus in the country created more uncertainty regarding the league resumption.

And with the situation currently getting worse in the country, and the number of coronavirus infections reaching 649 on Friday, sources at Burkinabe Football Federation indicate that the league will not resume until it is safe to do so.

“It will not be possible to resume the league this May. We cannot start the league under the current situation and we now must wait for the directive from the government when things are ready to roll out,” the source told Ducor Sports on Saturday.

“All I can say is we will wait for the government to give us direction. We will wait for them to confirm when things have improved. ”

Ducor Sports understands that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) sent a letter to the federation requesting a status update on the situation and future of the national league by Tuesday.

The Burkina Faso Professional League was on its match week 24 stage when it was suspended to give room for the national team to prepare adequately for the CHAN finals.

Salitas were on top of the table with 51 points, six clear of the second-placed Majestic who had accumulated 45 points from 13 wins.
