What’s With the Rainbow Captain Armbands and Laces?

You must have seen Premier League clubs change their profile pictures with rainbow colors in the background or watched a game where the captain wore the armband with a rainbow on it or even a player donning rainbow laces.

Well, the reason behind it is that, Sporting bodies including the Premier League and EFL, have decided to take part in the initiative – Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign, which aims at tackling the barriers which make LGBT(lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender) people feel uncomfortable or unwelcome in sport, and to take a united stand against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.

Matt Dickinson said, [perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]”As football connects with so many people, I think we’ve seen progress, football can’t solve social issues, but it can educate on social issues and tackle them.”[/perfectpullquote]
“I think we are moving in the right way, but obviously the fact that no player has felt able to come out while playing is one measure that we still have a long way to go.” He added.

Tottenham Hotspur went ahead and lit up the Wembley arch in rainbow colors in support of the campaign.
