Walter Nyamilandu was on Saturday re-elected as Football Association of Malawi president for another four years after winning the popular vote in FAM elections held at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi.

Nyamilandu was declared the winner after securing 23 votes while his long-time rival and Deputy James Mwenda scored 13 votes.

The victory means that Nyamilandu, who changed from his earlier decision to bow out at the end of his 15-year reign, will run FAM until 2024.

In his campaign to stay in power, Nyamilandu said the country’s football still needs him to re-engineer it to the growth to new heights so that it becomes an industry that supports national development of the southern Africa country.

“I am in a better and stronger position than ever to undertake projects of this nature while serving as FIFA Council member, drawing from the new connections I have carved on the international platform. With this FIFA position, I would be able to lobby for more support towards Malawi football,” he said.

Jabber Alide was elected as the 1st-vice president after polling 21 votes while his challenger Daudi Ntanthiko scored 15 votes.

Lameck Khonje lost his seat to Othaniel Hara in 2nd vice president race after garnering 15 of 36 votes.

FIFA representative Solomon Mudege was among those who witnessed the elections that had 26 voting delegates.

Eight delegates were from the Super League of Malawi, 6 each from Southern, Northern and Central Football Associations, 2 from women football, junior football, beach football and national coaches association.
