UD Songo Retain Mozambique League Title

UD Songo crowned Mozambican Premier Division ‘Moçambola’ champions.

UD Songo were crowned Mozambican Premier Division ‘Moçambola’ champions for a second successive season on Sunday after drawing 1-1 with Primeiro de Maio in Quelimane.

The champions have unassailable 58 points, followed by Ferroviário de Maputo on 54 pts but with one match at hand. Liga Desportiva de Maputo are third with 48 points.

This means that UD Songo’s last fixture next weekend may just be a mere formality, having bagged the title for the second year running.

But hosts Primeiro de Maio, who needed three points, were technically relegated to the second-tier league as they cannot get out of the relegation region even if they win the remaining game.

Maio dominated the match from the beginning, and their efforts paid up in the second minute but Songo got an equalizer late in the second stanza.

“We are going into our last league match as champions. Our mission next weekend is to go and display good football. Only a draw stood against us and the title as at last weekend and I’m glad my boys got just that,” UD Songo coach Nacir Armando told Ducor Sports.

In the other decisive match of the day Ferroviário de Maputo lost 3-0 at Beira, a result that helped Songo to become champion despite of their away draw.

Other teams in the dangerous region are UP Demanica and Sporting Nampula, who are second and third last with 30 and 19 points respectively.
