Togo Name Portuguese Coach Duarte As Le Roy’s Replacement

Togo have named Portuguese manager Paulo Duarte as head coach of the senior national team on Monday.

The Portuguese trainer comes in as Claude Le Roy’s replacement following the Frenchman resignation in April following the Sparrow Hawks failure to qualify for 2021 Africa Cup for Nations.

Togo were among the favorites to make to the next year’s tournament in Cameroon, but failed to win a single match in the qualifiers, as they ended at the bottom of Group G.

The Togo Football Federation (FTF) asked Le Roy to resign shortly after the conclusion of the qualifiers, and now they have opted for the 52-year-old.

Duarte will also serve as sporting director across the board, providing technical counsels to the junior national teams.

The journeyman has previously been in charge of Gabon and Burkina Faso national teams.

His biggest achievement in the continent was leading the Stallions to two Africa Cup of Nations finals tournaments.

His first competitive match will be the 2022 World Cup qualifier against Congo on September 1.

Komlan Kokou Jonas to act as an interim coach  before Portuguese technician takes over in August.
