2023 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers

Togo Held By Resilient Eswatini

Togo drew 2-2 with Eswatini in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification Group B match at the Stade de Kegue in Lome on Friday afternoon.

The Hawks were on the front foot in the early stages, as they had two quick opportunities that fell to Laba Kodjo but he could not trouble goalkeeper Mathabela Sandanezwe.

The hosts came the closest to breaking the deadlock in the 13th minute after Thibault Klidje connected with a set-piece by Alaixys Romao in the box but guided his header wide.

Fanelo Mamba had a chance to give Eswatini the lead in the 17th minute after he was setup by Dlamini to have a strike on goal on the edge of the box but his effort sailed slightly over the crossbar.

Togo were playing on counter-attacks and Euloge Placca eventually broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark from a direct free kick that easily beat Eswatini custodian.

Eswatini  tried to get back into the game before half time, but were unable to do so.

Togo led 1-0 at the break despite seeing very little of the ball.

Eswatini continued to apply the pressure at the start of the second 45, but much like the first half they struggled in front of goal.

In the 57th minute Samu Matse unleashed a powerful shot on goal, but saw his effort well-saved by the Togo keeper.

Five minutes later Laba Kodjo met a cross with a powerful header, but his attempt went agonisingly wide of the goal.

Eswatini did finally find their equaliser in the 84th minute after Sabelo Ndzinisa powered home a header to make it 1-1.

Paulo Duarte’s men did not take long to respond, as Kodjo levelled matters  three minutes latter after connecting a header from a well-taken corner tom make it 2-1

Togo’s lead was short-lived, as Siboniso Ngwenya levelled matters for Eswatini inside the extra time later with a powerful left-footed volley after he finished off a good team counter attack.
