Sudan Name Provisional Squad For AFCON

Sudan caretaker coach Burhan Tia has named only one foreign-based player in Falcons of Jediane’s provisional squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon.

Egypt-based defender Athar Attahir is the lone professional player in the 36-man squad that was unveiled on Tuesday ahead of the tournament that begins on January 9.

Three surprise omissions are Italy-based Ammar Tayfour, Al Hilal’s Faris Abdallah and Mohamed Abdel-Rahman who was recently on the books of Algerian side Ahly Burj Bou Arriredj.

Domestic giants Al Merrikh are the most represented team in the 36-man squad, contributing nine players.

Sudan will play in Group D of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Nigeria, Guinea Bissau and Egypt.

The Falcons of Jediane will start their campaign against Guinea-Bissau on January 11, before facing Nigeria on January 15, and concluding its group matches against neighboring Egypt on January 19.
