Sudan FA Ban Triggers Al-Hilal, Al Merriekh CAF Cup Exit

Sudanese Premier League clubs Al-Hilal and Al-Merriekh have been booted out of the CAF Champions League and Al Hilal Obeid from the CAF Confederation Cup.

The clubs’ unceremonious exit from the prestigious continental club showpiece followed the world football governing body’s decision to ban Sudan from international football.

Sudan’s government is believed to have been strongly interfering in the running of football in the North African country and is the reason for FIFA slapping an indefinite suspension on the Sudanese FA.

Al Hilal and Al-Merriekh, who were supposed to face Etoile du Sahel and Mozambique’s Ferroviarior Beira respectively today, are in effect unable to compete in the Total CAF Champions League.

The verdict comes much as a huge blow for Group A second-placed Al Merriekh who was on the brink of booking a place in the last-eight of the Champions League.

FIFA’s suspension isn’t expected to last more than six months provided the Sudanese FA puts its house in order.
