South Sudan Basketball Official Arrested And Grilled

The South Sudan Basketball Federation (SSFB) secretary-general Marier Anyuat was on Friday arrested by CID officers and taken to the Malakia Police Station for grilling.

The South Sudan Basketball Federation (SSFB) secretary-general Marier Anyuat was on Friday arrested by CID officers and taken to the Malakia Police Station for grilling.

The officers, who had gone Anyuat’s office, were repulsed by rowdy supporters before he was eventually arrested as he left the compound.

No official statement had been released on why he was arrested by the time of going to press, but sources say he was interrogated over claims of disobeying a court order.

Anyuat was voted in on January this year through an election that also saw former NBA star Loul Deng being elected president of the East African country’s basketball federation.

The elections were organized by a steering committee constituted by Ministry of Youth and Culture after suspending the former basketball body’s board of directors for overstaying in office.

But the ousted officials challenged the election with the High Court granting an order to stop the confirmation of new officials until investigations into the matter were completed.

However, the Deng led team ignored the court decision and went on with their official duties.

Anyuat is expected to be fined for defying of court orders by his office after the completion of investigations.

The new SSFB office has so far produced outstanding results, helping the South Sudan team move 20 places up latest FIBA World rankings.
