Senegal’s Edouard Mendy And Two Others Test Positive For Covid-19

Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and two other players have tested positive for Covid-19, the Senegal Football Federation (FSF) said on Saturday.

The Chelsea glovesman linked with Lions of Teranga from England just few hours after Blues 2-2 draw against Liverpool on Sunday.

Defender Kalidou Koulibaly and Famara Diedhiou were the other players who returned positive tests ahead of Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations Group B opener against Zimbabwe.

FSF said the three players were in isolation and subject to the appropriate health protocols.

The three increase the number of Covid-19 cases reported at Senegal camp to 11 after nine more cases were indentified on Tuesday before the team’s departure from Dakar to Cameroon.

The news of more virus cases confirms that the pandemic and the recent emergence of the more contagious omicron variant will continue to cause chaos as the tournament kick-offs on in Cameroon on Sunday.

A number of football staheholders have questioned if Cameroon and African soccer confederation organizers will be able to prevent major outbreaks at the monthlong event.

Senegal  have been drawn in Group B in Africa Cup of Nations and will begin their tournament against Zimbabwe on January 1, before facing Guinea and then Malawi on January 14 and January 18.
