Senegal Secure Africa’s First Ticket to the FIFA U17 World Cup

Senegal are not slowing down in proving their strength as one of Africa’s best footballing countries, as they continue to demonstrate it at various levels of international football competitions.

The most recent instance occurred at the current U17 Africa Cup of Nations, where they easily defeated South Africa 5-0 in the quarterfinal on Wednesday night at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers.

Two first-half own goals by each of South Africa’s central defenders, followed up by Mamadou Sadio’s goal and skipper Amara Diouf’s brace, saw the Teranga Cubs continue with their impressive performance in the competition.

This is the first time ever that Senegal have progressed beyond the group stages of the U17 AFCON. They have also qualified for the World Cup for the second time in their history, having done so in 2019.

Senegal replaced Guinea after they were removed from the competition by CAF for age fabrication.

The Teranga Cub won all three of their group matches, finishing atop Algeria, Congo, and Somalia. They are yet to concede a goal in the competition.
