Pyramids Sack Coach Arruabarrena, Announce Replacement

Egyptian Premier League side Pyramids have sacked Rodolfo Arruabarrena as head coach after just seven months into his two-year contract.

Arruabarrena’s contract is said to have been terminated on Tuesday afternoon just two days after the club elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup semis following a 5-4 shootout loss to Morocco’s Raja Casablanca.

The Argentinean, who replaced Croatian coach Ante Cacic, was held in high regard before the start his job, having guided his country’s giants Boca Juniors to the domestic double in 2015 before heading to the Arab Gulf region.

Pyramids has since moved swiftly in an attempt to restore normalcy by naming Greece national Takis Gonias  as Arruabarrena’s replacement.

Gonias makes a return to Egypt for the second time having been in charge of Wadi Degla FC for two years before his sacking in February 2020.

The 48-year-old has only managed Greek sides AO Glyfada, AO Episkopi Rethymnou, and GS Kallithea manager.

During his football years, Gonias turned for Evadiakos, Olympiacos, Iraklis, Sporting Gijón of Spain, Paniliakos, Panionios, and Italian sides Messina and Crotone.

Pyramids currently lie 10th in the Egyptian Premier League table with 34 points, 27 behind leaders Zamalek, although they still have five matches in hand.
