Nkana Absent Among Top Seeds For Confederation Cup draw

Zambian Super League champions Nkana FC will know their immediate destiny in the CAF Confederation Cup on Monday when the draw for the group phase is conducted in Cairo.

Nkana, who edged TAS Casablanca 3-2 on aggregate, are in the same pot with South African giants Orlando Pirates, Salitas FC of Burkina Faso and Cameroon outfit Coton Sport du Garoua.

The seeding is based on the five-year CAF ranking system, which is based on performances in the Champions League and Confederation Cup.

Holders RS Berkane and their counterparts Raja Club Athletic of Morocco; Etoile Sahel of Tunisia and Nigeria’s Enyimba FC will lead the four groups after having achieved the requisite points from their past performances to merit a top four place.

Napsa Stars will also find out the identity of their group opponents having been placed in Pot 4 together along with ASC Jaraaf, Al Ahli Benghazi, NAPSA Stars and Namungo SC.

However, Nkana could be drawn with Napsa Stars as there are no restrictions against two clubs from the same country being drawn into the same group.

Last season’s finalists Pyramids are placed in Pot 2 alongside the trio of North African club namely CS Sfaxien, ES Setif and JS Kabylie.

Each group will be played in a round-robin format with home and away ties, with the winners and runners-up advancing to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Matchday one will take place on 10 March and the final group games are currently scheduled for 28 April.
