Nine footballers died while nineteen others were injured in an accident at Timbo area, Upper Guinea, on the Mamou-Kankan Highway on Thursday.

Nine footballers died while nineteen others were injured in an accident at Timbo area, Upper Guinea, on the Mamou-Kankan Highway on Thursday.

The head of Guinea Football Federation (FGF) Mamou branch, Mamadou Saliou Diallo, confirmed the accident, which involved the players from second division side Etoile de Guinee.

“The team was on their way to Upper Guinea for their opening match of the league season,” said Diallo.

“The bus was involved in an accident and eight players died at the scene while another died on the way to the hospital. Three other players are on the danger list.

“It is really a very sad day for Guinean football.”

Latest reports indicate that the driver lost control of the bus, sending the vehicle down a steep embankment.

Five ambulances have been chartered to rush the injured to a Conakry hospital for specialised treatment.

Etoile de Guinee was scheduled to play against newly promoted side Karfamoriyah FC de Kankan away on Friday in their matchday one of Guinea’s second division league.
