Masters In Crisis After Makawa’s Departure

Abbas Makawa’s abrupt resignation as Masters Security’s head coach has left Malawi Super League giants staring at mini crisis.

Abbas Makawa’s abrupt resignation as Masters Security’s head coach has left Malawi Super League giants staring at mini crisis.

Ducor Sports understands that the experienced trainer’s departure to Silver Strikers for an assistant coach’s role is a clearest sign that all is not well at the Lilongwe-based club.

Makawa presented his resignation letter on Wednesday evening. This was days after the club’s elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup where they were bundled out by Ugandan outfit Proline FC.

Ducor Sports understands that his assistant Elia Kananji is also on his way out after the club failed to meet demands and particularly payment of salaries.

News of Makawa’s departure would filter on Thursday evening, with the club general secretary Christopher Njeula laughing of that Makawa’s departure is due to financial constraints.

“If he didn’t receive offers from bigger clubs, I believe he could still be here. We have been with him for a long time and we can’t say that he was not being paid all this time,” he said.

Besides Makawa’s departure, it is also emerging that a section of senior players at the club are unhappy with what they term as delayed winning bonuses by the management.

Last month, Masters’ players boycotted training and their subsequent match against Mzuni FC and, with that, lost three points.

There are also concerns over the slow pace in recruitment of new players, plus the renewal of contracts to some of the dependable players, in time for a gruelling second leg of Malawi Super League.
