Malawi Start Search for National Team Coach

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has advertised the vacancy for the head coach of the national team.

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has advertised the vacancy for the head coach of the national team.

The position became vacant after embattled Belgian tactician Ronny Van Geneugden left at the end of his contract last month.

Geneugden left after he failed to lead the Flames to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. In his tenure Malawi played 21 games, winning only two, losing eight and drawing 11.

The FAM will give the candidates five days to their forward their names before a selection panel puts a five-man shortlist to the federation’s executive committee to decide on who the chosen coach will be.

Some of the criteria that the federation has put for potential candidates is that they must have a good experience at top professional clubs or national team.

Applicants are also needed to have knowledge of Malawi national language as well as have a continental or international Coaching license from reputable and credible institution(s) with the minimum being a CAF License “A” or FIFA/UEFA equivalent.

Malawi are out of 2020 CHAN qualifiers after they were bundled out by an away goal rule by eSwatini early this month.

The Flames are currently in South Africa under caretaker coach Meke Mwase. They arrived on Thursday to participate in 2019 Cosafa Cup set to kick-off this evening.

The team starts its group B campaign with a match against Seychelles on Sunday before facing Namibia on Tuesday and Mozambique on Thursday.
