Malawi International Wants To Retire At Leopards

Black Leopards midfielder Robert Ng’ambi has hinted that he may be retiring from active football at the end of the current season.

Black Leopards midfielder Robert Ng’ambi has hinted that he may be retiring from active football at the end of the current season.

The 33-year- old player was quoted by nyasatimes.com admitting that he is considering stepping out of the game after a long and dedicated service to his country and clubs.

“If all goes well I would love to retire here at Leopards. The team has been good to me since I arrived in South Africa. Though I left for some time they welcomed me back when I wanted to come back,” he said.

“I know it’s tough to make a decision right now because of the lockdown but you know the respect I have for the team. Our focus now is to help the team avoid relegation. We can’t afford to go down. We will fight until the end. It won’t be easy but we will fight.”

After moving to Leopards in 2005, Ng’ambi established himself as one of the best midfielders in African football, his strength and goalscoring prowess setting him apart from his rivals.

He changed clubs only once in Premier Soccer League when he was snapped up by Platinum Stars in 2011 where he became one of their star performers and netted crucial goals.

Ng’ambi helped Dikwena to the Telkom Knockout Cup and MTN8 Cup titles in 2013 and also gained recognition for being one of the best midfielders in the top tier.

Following their cup double seven seasons ago, he was linked with moves to Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United, but the midfielder opted to stay in Rustenburg until the end of the past term.

However, he parted ways with the former Phokeng-based club at the end of the 2017/18 PSL season as they were relegated to the National First Division (NFD) before the club changed its name to Cape Umoya United and relocated to Stellenbosch.

In eight years at Livoda Duvha, over two spells, the midfielder scored 32 times and provided over 60 assists.

Born in Blantyre, Ng’ambi has represented the Flames in over 60 international matches and netted eight times.
