Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi was delighted to score his maiden goal for Mainz’s 2-2 draw with Cologne.

Awoniyi came off the bench in the 56th minute and required only five minutes to open his Bundesliga account and begin a comeback for his side.

The 22-year-old showed smartness and composure to tuck home a Riddle Baku cross as Mainz battled to secure a valuable point.

“I’m really happy about scoring my first goal for Mainz! We came back very well as a team today and fought our way back into the match!” Awoniyi told the media.

“I had the ball and I saw that I had some space to shoot. I feel good, it’s great to have helped the team by scoring that goal,” he said.

Awoniyi joined Mainz nine months ago on loan from English Premier League side Liverpool and has since made only seven appearances for the German outfit.

A product of Imperial Academy, which is owned by former Nigeria midfielder Seyi Olofinjana, Awoniyi spent the previous season at Belgian side Mouscron, scoring 14 goals in 38 appearances.

Mainz are now on 15th position with 27 points from 26 league outings, while Cologne are 10th with 33 points from the same number of outings.
