Kenyan descent Mwene named in Austria squad

Kenyan defender Phillip Mwene has been called up in Austria national team squad that is set to do duty in the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier against Azerbaijan.

Mwene has been included in the 25-man squad named on Tuesday by Das Team manager Ralf Rangnick that will take on Milli on Friday, 24 March, at the Raiffeisen Arena.

The 29-year-old plays for Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven a club he joined in 2021 from German Bundesliga side FSV Mainz 05 on a three-year deal.

Mwene made his maiden appearance for Austria in September 2021, where they lost 5-2 to Israel in the 2022 Qatar World Cup qualifier.

Mwene was born to a Kenyan mother and an Austrian mother, which made him eligible to feature for either Kenya or Austria on the international scene.

But despite holding dual citizenship, Mwene is ineligible to play for Kenya as three years have not passed since his last senior appearance for Austria national team.

Apart from that, the full-back has never expressed readiness to commit his international future to Harambee Stars.

The PSV star previously played for the Austria U19 and U21 with 20 appearances under his belt before he got his first senior national team call-up in 2020.

Mwene started his career at FK Austria Wien and played for the VfB Stuttgart before being promoted to the first team in 2013.

In 2016, Mwene left the Swabians for Kaiserslautern, where he made 65 appearances in all competitions before switching to Mainz.
