Ivorian Serey Die Hints At Shock Return From International Retirement

Serey Die is set to come out of international retirement and make his Ivory Coast comeback in the upcoming back-to-back 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar.

Serey Die is set to come out of international retirement and make his Ivory Coast comeback in the upcoming back-to-back 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar.

Die retired from international football in September last year and at the time said the stage was for the younger players to take.

But eight months down the line, the 35-year-old midfielder has hinted that he is likely to return to the Ivory Coast squad under new coach Patrice Beaumelle.

“The new coach wants me to return to the national team, we’ll see. Everything is in the hands of God,” he said.

With two matches played, the Elephants are third in Group K of the African qualifiers after picking up three points in their matches against Niger and Ethiopia.

Die has a wealth of football experience having played for teams in the Swiss Super League, the German Bundesliga and for the national team.

He currently turns for Swiss club FC Aarau on a short-term deal as he continues his career in Switzerland.

Die’s last appearance in national colours was during the team’s quarterfinals elimination by Algeria in the 2019 Africa Nations Cup in Cairo.

At his retirement, Die was capped 50 times and scored two goals in his six-year career.

He won the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations and played in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

As defending champions, he was captain when the Elephants exited the 2017 Nations Cup in the group stage.
