Herve Renard Quits As Morocco Coach After AFCON Exit

Herve Renard has left his post as the head coach of Atlas Lions following their elimination from the Round of 16 of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

Herve Renard has left his post as the head coach of Atlas Lions following their elimination from the Round of 16 of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

The Frenchman was tasked with winning the tournament which he failed after Morocco suffered a 4-1 penalties defeat at the hands of Benin on Friday evening.

Moroccan sports channel Arryadia TV channel broke the news in French on Tuesday afternoon quoting a source close to the former Zambia national team head coach.

“Imminent resignation of Herve Renard from his post,” Arryadia tweeted.

Since last year, rumours and speculation have run wild over the possibility that Renard might leave the Atlas Lions.

The defeat against Benin ended his chance of an unprecedented third Cup of Nations title with three different countries as a coach.

Renard led Ivory Coast to the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2015, three years after winning it with Zambia.

This was his second attempt to bring the trophy back to Morocco after a quarterfinal exit from the 2017 tournament in Gabon.
