Gor Mahia have been declared Kenyan champions after the remainder of the country’s professional league season was cancelled on Thursday due to the coronavirus pandemic.

K’Ogalo had a runaway seven-point lead at the top of the standings with ten round of matches left to play before the planned May 8 end date of the 2019/2020 Kenyan Premier League.

The decision to declare Gor Mahia as champions has been communicated by Football Kenyan Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwenda through his twitter handle. This comes a few hours after the Confederation of African Football wrote to the local football governing body asking to clarify the way forward regarding the league conclusion.

“Ooh and Congratulations Gor Mahia! You are champions once again and you will represent Kenya on the champions league next season. Let’s do this!” he posted on Twitter.

Nairobi City Stars, who until the suspension of the National Super League (NSL) were leading the second-tier league, have been promoted to the Kenyan Premier League alongside second-placed Bidco United.

“Nairobi City Stars!! Welcome to the Premier League. Sasa changamkeni na ma signature moto moto (Now get ready by signing quality players),” another tweet read.

The third-placed team in the NSL will play two-legged play-offs with the 16th placed team in the top-flight league to determine who plays in the KPL next season.

FKF is expected to give the way forward bout the FKF Cup which is supposed to produce the representative to the CAF Confederation Cup next season.
