Geoffrey Kamworor Wins First New York Marathon While Compatriot Mary Keitany Misses Out on Fourth Successive NY Marathon-Win

Kenya’s long-distance runner, Geoffrey Kamworor won the New York Marathon for the first time in his career, finishing 3 seconds ahead of compatriot Wilson Kipsang and 39 seconds ahead of Ethiopia’s Lelisa Desisa who finished third.

The 24-year-old completed the race in 2-hours, 10 minutes and 53 seconds. This was 5 seconds faster than his previous time in 2015 after he finished second behind Stanley Biwott.

In the Women’s Marathon, 2017 London Marathon winner Mary Keitany was denied her fourth successive New York Marathon. Keitany finished second (2:27:54) behind America’s Shalane Flanagan (2:26:53). Flanagan became the first American woman to win the race since 1977 and dethroning three-time defending champion Keitany, at the same time.
