FIFA Appoints Five-Member Committee to Run Namibia Football

FIFA has appointed businesswoman Hilda Basson- Namundjebo as the chairperson of Normalization Committee that will run Namibian football and organize elections of new executives of the Namibian Football Association (NFA).

Basson-Namundjebo’s appointment was announced during a press briefing that was called on Friday by FIFA Director of Football and Development in Africa and the Caribbean, Veron Mosengo-Omba.

Franco Cosmos, a lawyer by profession, will serve as deputy chair while Gaby Ahrens, Matti Mwandingi and Vivien Katjiuongua will help the duo to stabilize Namibian Football once again.

“Today, this normalization committee’s [members] are the bosses of football in Namibia and they will prepare and run football the way they see fit,” Mosengo-Omba said.

“It is the discretion and power of FIFA to decide who can be given the mandate for this. They report only to FIFA,” he added.

The normalization committee tasks will be to oversee the day-to-day running of the NFA and to conduct the NFA executive members’ elections, not later than 31 of May 2019.

“The normalization committee is tasked to run the NFA’s daily affairs but they will not have a seat in the federation. They will oversee the NFA; to ensure that members of the NFA whose executive committees are out of mandate, organize and conduct relevant elections; and once elections have been held at the member level, to organize and conduct elections of a new NFA executive committee,” he concluded.

FIFA placed Namibian football under normalization committee following their visit in December, during which its delegation observed that there were two factions within the NFA that were irreconcilable and that the situation was adversely affecting football as a whole.
