Ethiopia Look To Upset Burkina Faso

Ethiopia will take on Burkina Faso in their last 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match on Monday, kick-off at 16h00 GMT.

The game is set to be played at Stade Omnisports de Bafoussam in Kouekong.

The Walia Ibex succumbed to a 4-1 loss to hosts Cameroon in their second group match that was played on Thursday.

Ethiopia are placed fourth on the Group A standings with no point. But they are only three points behind second placed Burkina Faso.

The East Africans enter this final group match having already been mathematically eliminated from the tournament.

Ethiopia opened their campaign with a 1-0 loss over Cape Verde and followed that up with a heart-breaking loss to Indomitable Lions.

Their slim chance of booking a place in the knockout phase is a high scoring win against Burkina Faso’s Stallions.

Wubetu Abate, the Ethiopia head coach, will be keen to mastermind a famous victory over Burkina Faso.

Meanwhile, Burkina Faso beat Cape Verde 1-0 in their previous match in Olembe on Thursday. Adama Guira scored the all important goal in the first half of the game.

“It’s a first victory for us in the competition. It allows us to get back to the peloton to hope for qualification in the next round,” the Stallions coach Kamou Malo said after Cape Verde win.

“We are proud to have accomplished our duty. It is now up to us to continue our momentum. I am a happy man tonight and we will now have to work to achieve good matches in the future”.

The Stallions will advance to the round of 16 if they register a victory against the Walia Ibex.

This will be the fourth encounter between Ethiopia and Burkina Faso.

The Stallions have won two games compared to one for Ethiopia while one match has been drawn.
