Domestic Players Owed Salaries by Clubs are Facing Tough Times Feeding Families

Players owed salaries by their clubs in Cameroon’s domestic leagues are finding it difficult to feed their families, it has emerged.

Players owed salaries by their clubs in Cameroon’s domestic leagues are finding it difficult to feed their families, it has emerged.

Only nine clubs are found to be regularly paying their players on time with twenty-four (24) of the thirty-three (33) outfits reported to be owing their players wages.

The players’ union in Cameroon is bombarded with a floodgate of complaints by their members regarding non-payment of bonuses and salaries.

The situation, described as “disastrous” by former Indomitable Lions’ star man Geremie Njitab, has unavoidably bitten back at players who’re understood to be now facing problems taking care of their families.

“We receive calls from players with serious problems feeding their children. It’s shocking,” Njitab, the former Chelsea and Real Madrid player – now president of Cameroon’s players’ union said.

In a step towards getting a solution, the union has written to football governing entity FIFA to urge clubs to pay players and if necessary impose sanctions on teams found guilty of failing to fulfill the obligation to their players.

Non-payment of players’ wages, Njitab says, could fuel room for cheating and betting. He also revealed that the government annually subsidizes league clubs.

The leagues in Cameroon are starting late after an initial stand-off between stakeholders.
