Day After Being Declared Covid-19 Positive, Uganda Player Lwanga Tests Negative

Uganda national team midfielder Taddeo Lwanga has tested negative for COVID-19 a day after being found positive for the deadly virus, Ducor Sports reveals.

Lwanga, who turns for Tanzania Premier League Simba SC, was the only Uganda Cranes player who tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday.

The team is due to play Malawi in a decisive 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Reports stated that Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) demanded a retest of the player in a SADC approved hospital , which has been found to be negative after initially being declared positive in the first testing conducted in Blantyre.

However, Malawi officials have barred Lwanga from featuring in the match stating that they will go by un-stamped PRC test results released by Queens Hospital.

On Monday, a source close to the player clarified that the 26-year-old former Vipers SC star has tested negative and also availed the medical report to back his claim.

“After testing positive COVID-19 according to PCB testing report yesterday, as second opinion and for satisfaction, Lwanga went to test it again and results have come back negative,” she told Ducor Sports.

FUFA has since has written to the Confederation of Africa Football asking the body to intervene into the matter.

“We are aware of the irregularity raised by our Medical team in regard to the Covid-19 tests of Taddeo Lwanga. Two tests have returned different results. We have written to CAF about this matter raising the concerns,” FUFA stated.

“FUFA has written and requested CAF to consider the results from the SADC Accredited Laboratory which is all under is all under the same Management as Queens Central Hospital.”

Uganda are second in the Group B of  Africa Nations Cup qualifiers after managing two wins, as many draws and a loss. They have scored just three goals and have conceded one.

Malawi need a win at home against the East Africans in their final game to qualify as they have seven points after two wins, a draw, and two losses.
