Cano Sport Denied Title As Equatorial Guinea League Ends Season

The effects of the novel coronavirus continue to sweep across the African continent with leagues being cancelled.

Equatorial Guinea is the latest African country to cancel its football season as chances of concluding remain uncertain. The Executive committee of the Equatorial Guinean Football Federation met on Monday in Malabo and made the painstaking decision to end its competitions.

As a result, the current season has been declared as void with the league not having a designated winner for the first time in the league’s 49-year history.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) had written to member associations to determine to inform them of the fate of the 2019/20 season.

And in view of that, defending champions Cano Sport will represent the country in next year Africa Champions League.

The decision has also resulted in Akonangui FC being declared as the Central-African country’s representative in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.

In the same vein, Reax BP and Recrativo Lampert, who were well on their way to relegation, occupying the 11th and 12th positions respectively, will now remain in the Equatorial Guinean top-flight for next season.

Equatorial Guinea joins over 30 African nations that include the likes of Mauritius, Guinea, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Burkina Faso who have cancelled their 2019/2020 football season.

Ghana, South Africa and Nigeria are still deciding the way to go with their various leagues despite the ultimatum by the Confederation of African Football on clubs who will represent their countries in continental competitions next year.

CAF is expected to make an announcement on the fate of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted by Cameroon as other competitions across the world are being postponed.
