Cameroon Out To Upset Algeria In Douala

Cameroon will bank on their home ground advantage when they host Algeria in the first leg of their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers play off tie at the Japoma Stadium in Douala.

Kick-off is at 18h00 GMT.

The Indomitable Lions secured their spot at this stage of the qualifiers by finishing atop Group D ahead of Cote d’Ivoire, Mozambique and Malawi.

Cameroon will be in the haunt for their eighth world cup participation, against an Algerian side that is in search of their fifth appearance at the global event.

The Central Africans are looking to return to the Mundial, having failed to qualify for the 2018 edition in Russia. They are coming off an impressive Africa Cup of Nations campaign, where they finished third.

Their game against Algeria will be Rigobert Song’s first at the helm of the Indomitable, with a ticket to Qatar 2022 at stake.

The former Cameroon captain inherits a very talented squad headlined by Vincent Aboubakar and Karl Toko Ekambi, the two leading scorers at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

On the other hand, Algeria are also under pressure to claim a place in the global showpiece after missing out in failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Their best performance at the tournament came way back 2014 when the Desert Foxes reached the round of 16 in Brazil.

Algeria had a disappointing defence of their AFCON title in Cameroon as they were eliminated in the group stage, despite starting as one the favourites to go all the way.

Djamel Belmadi’s side come into the match without many important names, most notably striker Baghdad Bounedjah, player of Qatari Al Sadd, and Saeed bin Rahma.

Both teams have met in nine official matches according to FIFA statistics The Indomitable Lions have five wins and one loss against Algeria, with two games drawn.

In their most recent meeting in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier in October 2017, where Clinton N’Jie and Frantz Pangop’s strikes helped Cameroon secure a 2-0 home win.
