Cameroon Confirms They Won’t Host Africa Champions League Final

Cameroon will not host this season’s Africa’s Champions League final as earlier planned.

Cameroon will not host this season’s Africa’s Champions League final as earlier planned.

Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) president Prince Seidou Mbombo Njoya has revealed that the country is not in a position to host the Champions League after the government failed to provide the necessary guarantees on time.

“I informed Confederation of African Football (CAF) of the decision on Friday 10th July of our decision to decline hosting the 2019/2020 CAF Champions League final after failing to secure government’s backing to host the prestigious event,” Njoya told reporters.

“The decision is motivated by the risk of the situation of the Corona Virus pandemic in Cameroon and uncertainties about the pandemic.”

Cameroon was handed hosting rights for the first single-game title decider in March, more than 50 years after a chaotic end to last season’s competition.

CAF announced Japoma Stadium in Douala was selected stage the final and it was expected two other stadiums would host the semi-finals of the competition.

The traditional two-leg final format was changed after turmoil at the 2019 final that was disputed at the Court of Arbitration for Sports.

The 2019/2020 Africa Champions League final will feature two teams from the north. In the semifinals, Moroccan teams Wydad and Raja Casablanca are facing opponents from Egypt, Al-Ahly and Zamalek, respectively.
