Cameroon 2021: VAR To Be Used In All 52 Matches

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be used in all 52 matches of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The VAR was implemented in the last edition in Egypt where it was used from the quarter final stage of the competition.

In a statement just two days the elite continental competition begins, CAF confirmed that the technology will be used in all the games.

“ With CAF advancing with plans not only to improve the image of refereeing but also produce world class match officials in Africa, the implementation of VAR in all 52 matches in Cameroon is a step in the right direction,” CAF said in a statement.

The African football governing body also confirmed that it has appointed over sixty referee to officiate the tournament that kicks-off on Sunday, 09 January 2022.

“63 top match officials including women top referees Salima Mukasanga (Rwanda), Carine Atemzabong (Cameroon), Fatiha Jermoumi (Morocco) and Bouchra Karboubi (Morocco) will officiate the TotalEnergies Africa Vup of Nations, Cameroon 2021 matches,” CAF added.

“The list consists of 24 referees, 31 assistant referees and eight video assistant referees from 36 countries. The roster includes two referees from the CONCACAF as part of our inter-confederation skills exchange program.”

The selected referee in recent months, they were subjected to several aptitude tests through preparation courses and real competitive matches.

Six stadiums across different cities of the central African nation have been earmarked to host games during the tournament.

Olembe Stadium will host the opening and closing events, the 50,000 capacity Japoma Stadium in Douala, the Yaoundé Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium, the Omnisport Stadium in Bafoussam, the Limbe Omnisport Stadium in Ngeme, and the Roumde Adja stadium in Garoua will all be venues for the competition that will end on February 6,2022.
