CAF Champions League Groups Are Ready After Draw In Cairo

African Champions League holders Esperance of Tunisia will face AS Vita of DR Congo, Raja Casablanca of Morocco and JS Kabylie of Algeria in the group phase of the 2019/2010 campaign.

Wednesday’s draw split the qualifiers into four groups with each club facing their three rivals home and away.

The Tunisian giants who have won back to back African Champions League titles survived a scare from Elect Sport of Chad to progress on a 3-2 aggregate.

Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca are three-time champions and they last won the competition 20 years ago while AS Vita won their first and only title in 1973.

Five-time champions TP Mazembe and Angolan outfit Primeiro de Agosto were drawn in Group A alongside Zesco United of Zambia with the other spot waiting the winner of rescheduled tie between Zamalek and Generation Foot of Senegal.

Étoile du Sahel, who are the second Tunisia representatives, are in Group B with former winners Al-Ahly, Sudan’s Al-Hilal and Zimbabwean giants FC Platinum.

Making up Group D is Algeria’s USM Alger, South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and will be joined by Petro de Luanda of Angola and Wydad Casablanca from Morocco.

The group phase kicks off on the weekend of November 29-December 1. A second round of matches will be played midweek on February 14-16, 2020.

Group B: Étoile du Sahel, Al-Hilal, FC Platinum, Al-Ahly

Group C: USM Alger, Mamelodi Sundowns, Petro de Luanda, Wydad Casablanca

Group D: Raja Casablanca, JS Kabylie, AS Vita Club, Espérance de Tunis

CAF also held draws for the Confederation Cup play-offs which pitted winning teams from the second preliminary round of the second-tier competition against losing teams from the second preliminary round of the African Champions League.

Information from the CAF website indicates that the first leg matches have been scheduled for 30 October 2019 and the return leg matches will take place on 5 November 2019, with the winners progressing to the group stage.
