Bouna Sarr: Senegal Defender To Miss World Cup

Bayern Munich and Senegal defender Bouna Sarr will miss the World Cup after being ruled out for up to 10 weeks with a knee injury.

The 30-year-old has not feature in a competitive fixture this season for his club due to ongoing patella tendon issues.

He had an operation on Tuesday to repair the knee after the scans revealed the injury was serious.

“I don’t know how to express my disappointment to be away from the pitch for the coming months, and especially to miss a World Cup,” Sarr revealed on his Instagram page.

“It was not an easy decision to make but after many months of thinking, I understood it would be the wisest, and above all the most reasonable, decision for the rest of my career.”

Sarr’s problem started last season hence he has not played for the Budesliga champions in the 2022/23 campaign despite being named in three matchday squads.

The France-born star joined Bayern in 2020 from Marseille, and has been a regular for Lions of Teranga squad under Alliou Cisse.

The player was one of the certainties to be in Cisse’s preliminary squad of 29 players before this setback.

He played a key role in Senegal’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations campaign as they beat Egypt in the final to claim their maiden continental title in Cameroon in February.
