Betway Power and City Oil Setup Crucial Semifinals with a Possible All-Ugandan Final Looming
Hosts Uganda maintained dominance at the 2017 Zone 5 Championships group stages after securing crucial wins over Rwanda and Kenya in the men’s category.
In what were the most anticipated games of Day 3, a poised Rwandese side, Patriots who faced City Oil and Kenyan die-hards Kenya Port Authority (K.P.A) who played Betway Power, were each held off and suffered defeat at the hands of the Ugandan-based clubs.
The scores ended 73-77 and 60-73 respectively, putting the host sides on top of two groups each, setting up a semifinal swap in what should be another heated clash. City Oil meets K.P.A while Betway Power will play against Patriots.
Domestic league rivalry side, both teams have given the Ugandan fans a performance to smile about, not showing signs of slowing down with emphatic wins overall. But K.P.A and Patriots are not teams to overlook. The former is hell-bent on using its physical presence, size and hustle-hard mentality which has proven a problem for their opponents.
City Oil will have to sneak past a solid K.P.A defense and rely on a better shooting range to stretch the Kenyan side outside the three-point arc. Betway Power plays a composed Patriots and this could be a close semifinal with both teams diverse on offense and fast on the lanes.
In the ladies’ category, Uganda Christian University (UCU) Lady Canons pulled off an outstanding performance which could prove decisive, to edge out defending champions, Kenya Ports Authority 69-68, in their second game of the tournament. The win is one of three after beating Horseed of Somalia in game one and most recently, Don Bosco of Tanzania.
