Alex Song Joins Djibouti Premier League Side Arta Solar

Former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder Alexandre Song has signed for Djibouti Premier League side Arta Solar.

Former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder Alexandre Song has signed for Djibouti Premier League side Arta Solar.

The 33-year-old joins the little known East African outfit on a free transfer after leaving Swiss club Sion where he was sacked after refusing to take a pay cut.

The former Cameroon international arrived in Djibouti on Sunday five days before signing a two-year deal which was made public on Friday by a Cameroonian publication, LionIndomptable.net.

“Alexandre Song takes the destination of Djibouti. Against all expectations, the Cameroonian has deposited his suitcases in this modest country located on the west coast of the southern outlet of the Red Sea,” the online publication wrote.

Song started his professional career with French side Bastia and rose to prominence at Arsenal where he made over 200 appearances.

He became a key part of Arsene Wenger’s squad during the 2008-09 season and his form in the Premier League persuaded Barca to make a move, signing him for a reported €17million.

It did not work out for Song at Camp Nou or West Ham, whom he represented for two years on loan until 2016.

Song left Barca for free in 2016 and joined Russia’s Rubin Kazan, but he made just 22 league appearances before making a move to Swiss top-flight league.
