Al Ahly To Part Ways With Long-Standing Captain

Egyptian giants Al Ahly have decided against renewing the contract of long-serving captain Hassom Ashour.

Egyptian giants Al Ahly have decided against renewing the contract of long-serving captain Hassom Ashour.

The veteran midfielder, who has won most titles in the club’s history, is no longer in the plans for Rene Weiler and his technical bench.

Ashour’s initial contract with the Red Devils is set to expire at the end of June, but it is reported that Weiler has already petitioned the club to drop him.

“Ashour’s contract will not be renewed,” a source tells Ducor Sports. “The coach no longer needs him at the club.”

There has also been a groundswell of support for the 32-year-old from Ahly fans who have grown weary with a perceived lack of creativity within the team.

Ashour came through the Red Devils youth ranks in 2003 and went on to help them to 12 Egyptian Premier League titles, three Egyptian Cups and five African Champions League trophies.

However, this season he has been struggling to command a regular place in the line-ups at the club, thus becoming evident that the midfielder won’t be playing for Ahly next season.

Information from the Egyptian Premier League shows that Ashour has made a total of five appearances across all competitions this season, with only one game as a starter.
