Al Ahly Merowe forfeits Gor Mahia CAF Confederation Cup Match

Sudan football club Al Ahly Merowe has decided to forfeit the CAF Confederation Cup first round, second leg match against Gor Mahia scheduled to take place on Sunday October 24 in Nairobi.

The tie was set to be played at Nyayo National Stadium, with kickoff slated for 4:00pm (EAT), but that won’t happen as since the club has informed Confederation of African Football (CAF) about their financial challenges.

“Reference the above-mentioned match, we would like to inform you that the Sudanese Federation have communicated the withdrawal of the club Ahly Merowe from the competition,” reads a letter sent CAF to Kenyan FA.

“Accordingly, we hereby inform you that the match is canceled and that Gor Mahia have been qualified for the additional 2nd preliminary round of the competition.

“The host federation is kindly requested to proceed with the payment of all financial dues to the officials.

“A detailed decision will be communicated to all concerned parties in due course.”

According to the CAF regulations, a team which abandons a match can be suspended for the whole competition for a period of three years and also face financial penalties.

Gor Mahia beat Merowe 3-1with the three goals coming from Samuel Onyango, Benson Omalla and Jules Ulimwengu.

The first leg was played in Egypt and it saw the Sudanese side arrive in Egypt a day to the mtahc that was played at the New Suez City.
