Al Ahly Coach Over The Moon After Win

Al Ahly coach Rene Weiler was delighted after the team beat Equatorial Guinea champions Cano Sport in a CAF Champions League first leg encounter played on Saturday in Malabo.

Salah Mohsen and experienced winger Walid Soliman netted for the Reds who are chasing their first Champions League crown since 2013.

Speaking after the game, Weiler said that the team was composed from the onset and that played a key role in the victory.

“We were the closest in the first half but we missed a lot of chances, and in the second we translated it successfully. We translated the chances for goals in the second half and certainly that result will help us in the return leg,” the Swiss coach said.

“The difficulty of the game was not only with Cano Sport but on the pitch. The pitch was very difficult and it caused us many problems. We are very happy to face a team like Cano Sport who play good football, and we got a clean sheet.”

This was the first match for Weiler who was appointed a few days ago to take charge of the 41-time Egyptian champions.

He took charge following the departure of his predecessor Martin Lasarte who was shown the door on August 18 despite the Uruguayan trainer guiding them to their 41st league win in July.

The 45-year-old is one of the promising managers in Europe and the highlight of his career was managing Belgian giants, Anderlecht, for one year.

Weiler’s best experience as a manager was in Switzerland where he managed FC Aarau, the team he represented as a player.
