AFC Leopards Defender Heads to Sweden

The central defender has moved to Sweden for a three-month football and academic scholarship with Swedish Division two side, Gottne IF.

AFC Leopards will be without defender Joshua Mawira for at least the next three months.

The central defender has moved to Sweden for a three-month football and academic scholarship with Swedish Division two side, Gottne IF.

Mawira, a former Nairobi City Stars player, last featured for Leopards one week ago during a league match against Chemelil Sugar at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

He sat out of Sunday’s 1-0 win over Ulinzi Stars at Afraha Stadium in Machakos and was equally missing when Leopards was held by Kakamega Homeboyz at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Wednesday afternoon.

New signing Boniface Mukhekhe wore his number 6 shirt against Kakamega Homeboyz, raising questions over his whereabouts.

The club has now confirmed that he’ll be away in Sweden for the next three months.

“Our defender Joshua Mawira has shortly left the club for a 3-month scholarship in Sweden. Mawira has joined Swedish division two club, Gottne IF on a football and academic scholarship. His last KPL match was against Chemilil Sugar FC which we won 2-0 at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos,” Leopards posted on their social media pages.

It’s not the first time Mawira is quitting Leopards to further his studies. In January 2018, he left the club and traveled to Sweden for a similar scholarship next before rejoining the team in November 2018.
